Approach:
Networking (Be Well Informed and Prepared to Help):
Network with the Veterans Administration, other homeless/unsheltered person advocates, and organizations focused on homeless vets. Determine what they provide, when they provide it, and where they provide assistance. Assess and fill the gaps. Create a 1 + 1 = 3 synergy with other organizations.
Outreach (Engage and Listen):
Using care packages and conversations the outreach campaigns will focus on direct contact, a great deal of listening, and establishing solid, trusting relationships. The relationships will become the foundation for direct and honest conversations about each veteran’s deep hole and their desire to stay where they are or take actions to change.
Connect Veterans and Resources (Inform and Encourage Action):
This is at the core of what Deep Hole Ministries does. The inflection point is when a homeless veteran learns that they are not alone, they are worthy of our support, and there are resources available to help them rejoin the society they fought to protect. Then assist them in taking actions to leverage the appropriate resources.
Mentorship (Guide, Support, and Be there When They Stumble):
Our mentorship approach is about being there as the veterans ‘learn to walk’ again. There will be trial and error, and some set-backs. Creating a structure for helping without taking ownership is key. Two forms of mentorship will be engaged: Peer mentors trained/coached by DHM and DHM mentors.
